The following list of links is for your information and in no way should be construed as an endorsement of any of the products or services listed.

  • SB+ Solutions - SB+ Solutions was the first and is still the leading reference for IBM's SB+ application development environment. Loaded with information about how to build quality software applications, and including a comprehensive technical reference, the "big green book" (as it is commonly known) has been, and continues to be, the de facto standard for SB+ developers worldwide.

The manuscript is freely available at the following location:

  • SB+ Server Reference Manuals - Looking for more information about the latest SB+ release (v5)? Check out the actual vendor documentation here.

  • Thinking in Java, Thinking in C++ (Volumes 1 and 2), Thinking in Patterns - Interested in learning Java, C++, or design patterns, but you just don't have the cash to buy a bunch of books? These books, written by Bruce Eckel and available for download from the web (for free!), provide great foundational information. And you just can't beat the price.

  • Java 2 Standard Edition - The Java 2 standard edition provides everything you'll need for creating, compiling, and running Java programs on a variety of different platforms (except an editor, of course). Best of all, it's free for the download. Be prepared, however, it's hefty! The tutorials on the Sun site aren't too bad either!

Important Note: If you think you might wonder someday about a particular Java base class or method, be sure to bookmark the J2SE API documentation from Sun. These pages contain all of the documentation for the current classes.

  • Java 2 Enterprise Edition (J2EE) - Interested in learning a bit more about the Java enterprise technologies? Then be sure to check out the J2EE, also downloadable for free from Sun. The download includes all the J2EE documentation and classes needed for JSP, servlets, Enterprise Java Beans (EJBs), and a whole host of other goodies.

Also don't forget to grab a web server to run your J2EE components. A number of web servers are available for free, though there may be fees for commercial deployments. A couple servers of note:

    • Tomcat - Tomcat is relatively easy to setup and run standalone, or it can be easily integrated with the Apache web server (www.apache.org). It's stable, supports JSP and servlets, and is widely used as a reference server.

      http://jakarta.apache.org

    • Orion - Orion supports JSP, servlets, and EJBs, but it can be extremely difficult to configure. (The lack of significant documentation doesn't help matters much.) Once it's working, though, it's fast and stable. Free for development, fee for commercial use.
