You did give me a hint though.  I wonder if ssh is doing this?  I'll try straight telnet.

Ahh, got it.

I used stty to change erase to ascii 8 from 127.  THEN I had a handle to adjust in putty.

So I think that will go into my .profile

stty erase ^H
