I received an email from Rocket today announcing the new SB/XA availability.  This is from that announcement.

Quote
A new version of the SB/XA Personal Edition is available to for customers now using Personal Editions of UniData or UniVerse

It just blows my mind that those of us with actual LICENSED copies of Unidata and Universe aren't invited to the SB/XA party.  I tried installing SB/XA a couple of releases ago and it does in fact install, but when you try to launch, it blows up with "must be using a PE version of Unidata".

I never expected to be punished for paying for database licenses.  This is ridiculous.

Do you know if this one has the same 60 day life as the earlier one? Perhaps that's the difference. I downloaded one in July that stopped working after 60 days (although I did put it on a PE version). There may not be much they can do to limit the connectivity (number of users etc) so they may have decided to use the limit with the database???

The funny thing is that SBClient is included. Most of the terminal emulations are gone - and it REALLY doesn't like to connect to older versions of SB+ (apparently there is no more user licensing on the client side). Otherwise it's pretty similar.

With wIntegrate set for EOL at the end of the year - I'm wondering if their coming out with a new version (I'm guessing not likely) or what type of "go forward" strategy they have.

You got to have something you could load UD/UV PE on if you really wanted to. Talking with Rocket may also get you a trial/beta license to play with....

I don't know anything about the shelf life of XA, but it wouldn't surprise me if they had the same kind of expiration date wackiness such as you've described.

The original party line was that SBClient was not going to be included, then they reverted on that and now it's included, but if it's been emasculated it may be a horse of a different color (though reusing the same name for marketing purposes).

I actually do have machines that I could load UD PE onto, but I find it ridiculous that as a paying customer I would have to go through such iterations to even try XA.  If there was something really cool with the new XA that I thought had some kind of a future I might be interested enough to try it, but going through the hassle merely for the exercise of seeing how far they haven't come is not a good investment of time for anyone.
